Our fifth STEMCyclists summer camp was held at the PUSH Community Hub on the west side of Buffalo with funding provided by New York State Senator Sean Ryan. The week included bicycle building led by GObike instructors and STEM-related activities. The week concluded with a community bike ride to the Albright Knox Museum, led by Slow Roll Buffalo Squad volunteers.

Our fourth STEMCyclists summer camp returned to UB STEP with bridge funding provided by The Spencer Foundation. The first week of camp focused on bicycle building led by GObike Instructors and STEM-related activities. The second week featured community bike rides led by Slow Roll Buffalo. Community bike rides involved UB South Campus, Rails to Trails to Andersons, and Freedom Park. Six student peer mentors returned to mentor the new cohort of youth.

A free and all-ages event where families explored the science of cycling through hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) stations, bike-related activities and a community ride led by Slow Roll Buffalo. The event was one of just over 50 selected nationwide to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the National Science Foundation. The celebration began with an opening ceremony featuring remarks from Suzanne Rosenblith, GSE dean and professor, and a keynote address by Jillian Hanesworth, founding poet laureate emeritus of Buffalo. The day’s activities included a seven-mile community bike ride through Buffalo neighborhoods, followed by interactive STEM activities led by returning STEMCyclists Student Mentors and participating community organizations, including GObike Buffalo, East Side Bike Club, Slow Roll Buffalo, Wheels for Workers, Colored Musicians Club, Colored Girls Bike Too, Norfolk Ave Block Club, Families Aimed Toward Excellence (FATE), and the Buffalo Sewer Authority. Bridge funding for the event was provided by UB’s Office of Inclusive Excellence and the Center for Learning Sciences.

2024 NSF Summer Camp

With funding from the National Science Foundation, our third STEMCyclists camp was scaled to two weeks and 27 student participants. Five students who completed the camp in 2022 returned as peer mentors. The first week was focused on bicycle rebuilding led by GObike instructors and STEM-related activities, and the second week focused on community bike rides on area roadways and bicycle trails led by Slow Roll Buffalo. Community bike rides focused on uncovering STEM in the community with the Colored Musicians Club, African American Veterans Monument, Buffalo Zoo, Tree Canopy Neighborhoods, Freedom Park, The Wildlife Organization, and the Outer Harbor. 

“Intro 101 to Bikes” was led by Adam Ianni at the GObike workshop. This session focused on basic intro sessions to bikes and bike rebuild and repair.

Our STEMCyclists team held a professional learning day which was led by Dr. Fred Zelt prior to camp where Fred modeled his bike-related STEM curriculum. 

To mark the Centennial Celebration of New York State Parks and Trails, our youth participated in a bike ride to Niagara Falls. The Niagara Greenway commission supported the bike ride with bus and bike transportation. This bike ride was chaperoned by Slow Roll Buffalo.

Our second STEMCyclists camp was conducted again as part of UB STEP’s summer programming held at the University at Buffalo’s South Campus. Two students who completed the camp in 2022 returned as peer mentors to guide students through the camp’s bike rebuilding led by GObike Buffalo lead instructors and STEM-related activities. The camp concluded with a community bike ride on the Rails to Trails so that students experience how trails connect communities.

Our first STEMCyclists summer camp was conducted as part of UB STEP’s summer programming held at University at Buffalo’s South Campus. The camp included bicycle rebuilding led by a GObike Buffalo lead instructor and STEM-related activities, concluding with a Slow Race ride at the end of the week.
