Research Team

Noemi Waight, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
Noemi’s first bike was blue with colored tassels; she is an avid cyclist and a League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructor (LCI). Dr. Waight’s research centers understandings of the nature of technology (NoT) in formal and informal learning in the context of precollege science and STEM education.

Ryan M. Rish, Ph.D
Associate Professor
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
Ryan is a life-long advocate for youth participation in all aspects of recreational and competitive cycling. His research interests focus on community-based learning and addressing spatial justice issues among youth.

Shakhnoza Kayumova, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Shakhnoza is a four-lingual researcher, teacher educator, and learning scientist. Her research closely examines the ways in which STEM education could be a context for empowerment and positive science identity development of linguistically and ethnically/racially diverse learners, and thereby increasing the representation of people of color in STEM fields.

Greses Pérez, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Tufts University
Greses is an engineer, science educator, and learning scientist. Her scholarship focuses on advancing conceptual and pedagogical models of the relationship between the language and cultural practices of minoritized communities and engineering practices, accounting for the potential mismatch between localized and disciplinary ways of knowing and speaking.

Jennifer Tripp, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
SUNY Geneseo
Jennifer Tripp enjoys leisurely bike rides. Her research draws upon critical, asset-oriented, ecosystem, opportunity, and STEM identity theoretical perspectives and mixed methods approaches to examine the liberatory opportunities for STEM education and their relationships with the complex, intersectional identities of K-20 students, educators, and STEM professionals across contexts, towards more just futures.

David W. Jackson, Ph.D.
Visiting Researcher
Middle School Science Teacher
Dave loves duathlons (the running and cycling variety), and he enjoys riding in almost all weather, as long as visibility and traction are okay! His research interests center on student engagement in science and engineering, mostly with middle- and high-school youth within and between in-and out-of-school time learning environments.

Finn Goehrig
Ph.D. Student
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
Finn is a long time Buffalo local and cyclist, teaching math and computer science at UB’s Gifted Math Program since 2013. His research focuses on learning communities in informal spaces, communities of practice, as well as the pedagogy of computer science and interdisciplinary mathematics, with particular interest in how communities of common interests self-organize into learning spaces and how these kinds of communities can be grown and fostered.

Stacy Scheuneman
Ph.D. Student
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
Stacy is a physics education researcher and learning scientist. Her research interests revolve around the design, development, and use of interactive technologies for learning introductory physics concepts through real-time data visualization, with an emphasis on sociocultural aspects of human-computer interaction.

Fatemeh Mozaffari
Ph.D. Student, Learning and Instruction
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
Fatemeh’s research lies at the intersection of language and STEM education, focusing on students’ linguistic practices in informal STEM learning environments. She is committed to advancing inclusive, asset-based approaches to teaching and learning that honor students’ backgrounds and strengths.

Fred Zelt, Ph.D.
Geologist and Cyclist
Fred Zelt is a geologist and cyclist living in Pittsburgh, PA who created a STEM and Cycling curriculum with the Ruach Bicycle Club in 2020-2021. Fred has taught Confident City Cycling, assisted in Smart Cycling and LCI classes, and teaches private cycling lessons as an active League Cycling Instructor. Fred had cycled 4,295 miles across the USA and 200 miles in a day raising funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis.
